8 Ways to Make Your Backyard a Summer Paradise

July 30, 2018

Summer is the perfect time for backyard barbecues, family games, neighborhood parties and late nights on the patio. Many home owners spend most of their energy and resources on decorating their indoor spaces and forget about the outdoor spaces.  With just a little effort and creativity, you can make your backyard a summer haven, a place where you and your family and friends will want to spend those long summer days together.  Here are 8 helpful hints to make your Backyard a Summer Paradise.

Make the Backyard Private--
You may have the best neighbors in the world, but everyone needs a little privacy once and awhile. After a long day, you may just want to be alone and enjoy nature. There are many creative ways to ensure a little backyard privacy. One easy way to create a private, secluded backyard paradise is to install a fence. A fence can provide a level of safety for your backyard and at the same time make your backyard a bit more secluded. There are many fence options that can compliment your landscaping.  If a fence is not for you, you may consider using shrubs or vining plants on a trellis for a more natural look. Some people have made fences or privacy screens out of recycled materials, glass, metal or wood pieces, making a sculptural art piece to provide privacy.  Just remember that your neighbors have to look at what ever you choose to use as well.  So, choose wisely.

Inspect and Update Decks and Patios --
Before you host your next party on the deck, make sure to do an inspection of it and make any needed repairs or updates.  Wooden decks can be warped and effected by extremes in weather. Replace any warped, missing or damaged boards.  Once you've made sure that the deck is in good shape structurally you'll want to sand, stain and seal your deck to protect it from the elements. If you have a stone patio, check for missing pieces, cracks or uneven surfaces and repair as needed. After you've taken care of this important maintenance, your deck will be ready for your next big backyard bash.

Update your landscaping --

You may have the most beautiful stone patio on the block, but if your patio is surrounded by a bunch of dead or overgrown plants, you probably won't want to spend much time on it. You don’t need spend a lot on  plants or trees to make your backyard amazing. It may just take a little sweat equity on your part. Trim back trees and bushes, trim the lawn and keep it watered, pull the weeds,  and plant flowers to add pops of color around the yard. If you want to add some new plants and trees ask a landscaping expert for advice before you buy, and then sit back and enjoy the view.

Purchase Patio Furniture and Essentials --
Once your deck or patio is ready you'll want to add some furniture so you can throughly enjoy your outdoor space. Before you make your purchase, think about the things that you will want to do outdoors.  Will you be eating, hosting parties, relaxing in a hammock or sitting around a fire pit?  It may also help to look at outdoor living spaces online or in magazines for a little inspiration.  After you decide what kind of furniture you need, consider purchasing weatherproof patio furniture. There are a lot of furniture choices that are durable, stylish and comfortable. Patio furniture can be exposed to harsh, seasonal weather, so you’ll want to make sure it lasts for years.

Install an Outdoor Kitchen--
For many people, the word "summer" is synonymous with grilling. If you are one of these people and you grill at least twice a week from spring through fall and if you love eating outdoors, you may need an outdoor kitchen. You're backyard kitchen doesn't have to be over the top, but just adding a countertop and kitchen storage can make your cooking experience easier and more enjoyable. If you want to go a step further, you could even add a small refrigerator and sink to make your outdoor kitchen fit for a culinary master.

Get a Rug for the Patio-

Outdoor rugs have become more popular over the last ten years and can be found at a variety of stores and in many different price ranges. They can be found in a variety of colors, shapes, sizes and textures and are generally made to stand up to all types of weather. It's amazing how a simple rug can pull a space together making it cozier and more of an extension of your house.  Not only do they make a great addition to your outdoor space, they may also protect your deck.  Beautiful and practical, what more could you want.

Add Colorful Cushions and Pillows --

You can make your new summer paradise comfortable and inviting by adding some throw pillows and cushions. Choose some fun summer colors and patterns to set the mood.  These pops of color will make your space more inviting and draw people in where they can sit back, relax and enjoy your amazing backyard.

Add Outdoor Lighting--

Twinkling lights against a dark evening sky can take a backyard from ordinary to magical. Adding strands of lights can put a frame around a beautiful living space. You can also use lighting to highlight the best features of your backyard, like a  gorgeous tree, flower bed or a  lovely stone path. Adding emphasis to features like these is almost like putting art work on the walls of your living room. Not only can lighting add beauty to your home it can also be a safety feature.  There are lots of lighting options from hardwired, to solar and now there are even smart lighting options that can be controlled by your phone.
